India and the United States reached an agreement on Thursday that removes a key obstacle to the implementation of a landmark global trade deal that has been stalled for months.
The agreement, regarding international rules on government’ stockpiling of food, comes ahead of a meeting of the Group of 20 major economies to be held in Brisbane, Australia, this weekend.
The trade package, first agreed upon at a World Trade Organization ministerial meeting in December in Bali, Indonesia, is the first significant global trade deal since the creation of the W.T.O. nearly two decades ago.
