Recent international crises are changing the nature of global security – the Syrian conflict, the rise of the Islamic State, the deterioration of relations between Ukraine and Russia, and privacy concerns revealed by Edward Snowden, among others, are cross-cutting issues which need to be addressed at a global level.

Security Jam, an independent project run by Security and Defence Agenda (SDA), a Brussels-based think tank, and IBM provides a platform for political, civilian and military stakeholders to exchange ideas on international security challenges. Gateway House was a partner for Security Jam 2014, a 3-day online global conversation where issues such as cyber security, the evolving role of NATO, the EU’s role as a global security broker, climate change and other global challenges were discussed by experts from around the world.

A report, which includes recommendations from the online discussion, was launched on 4 March 2014 in the presence of General Philip Breedlove, NATO Supreme Allied Commander in Europe and Ambassador Alain Le Roy, incoming Secretary General of the European External Action Service and former United Nations Under-Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations.
