India-EU: defence cooperation and the role of industry

As part of the ‘EU-India Think Tank Twinning Initiative 2016’, Gateway House: Indian Council on Global Relations, Mumbai, partnered with Istituto Affari Internazionali, Rome, on a series of papers, titled “Moving forward the EU-India Security Dialogue: Traditional and Emerging Issues.”

The topic had four sub-themes:

  • India-EU maritime security and freedom of navigation from the South China Sea and Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean;
  • India-EU defence cooperation: the role of industry;
  • Potential and challenges of India-EU space cooperation;
  • India-EU cooperation on cyber security and data protection.

This paper on India-EU defence cooperation is part of the project and has been authored by a Gateway House research team led by Sameer Patil, Fellow, National Security studies. The paper discusses that European defence companies can contribute significantly to India’s military modernisation under the ‘Make in India’ campaign. It concludes that before this can happen they will have to deepen their interactions in the country at the political and strategic levels to identify common areas of interest and understand India’s technological priorities in the sector.
