Prime Ministerial Elections in Japan

Prime Ministerial Elections in Japan

Japanese Members of Parliament will vote for their new Prime Minister, the sixth in the last five years, on August 29. The elections were called for after the current Prime Minister – the President of the governing party, the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) – Naoto Kan confirmed his resignation after spending 15 months in office. Five candidates, all former or current cabinet ministers, will be competing for the position – Banri Kaieda, Seiji Maehara, Yoshihiko Noda, Michihiko Kano and Sumio Mabuchi.
