Prime Minister Modi visits Bhutan

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in Bhutan for a two-day visit from June 15. This is Prime Minister Modi’s first visit abroad after taking over the leadership of the government. The visit is seen as an extension of his outreach to SAARC nations which was first initiated when he invite the leaders of all SAARC countries for his swearing-in ceremony.

Prime Minister Modi, accompanied by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will hold meetings with Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and will also call on the current King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, as well as his father, Jigme Singye Wangchuck. The key talking points during the visit will be bilateral issues such as hydel power projects as well as initiating more economic linkages between the two countries.

This is the first incidence of an Indian head of government has chosen to make their first foreign stopover at Bhutan after taking charge
