Amid stepped up efforts by India to ease the political crisis in Maldives, India’s Foreign Secretary, Ranjan Mathai, will visit the Maldives from 15 – 16 February. During his visit, Mathai is expected to hold discussions with a number of political leaders, including former leader Mohammed Nasheed and new President Mohammed Waheed Hassan.
Since Nasheed’s resignation, which he claims was a coup d’etat, the Indian government has reached out to both leaders, seeking a peaceful resolution to the situation. India has ensured President Mohammed Waheed Hassan of ‘continuous support’ for his efforts to ensure stability and peace in the country.
