Pakistan-Afghanistan-Turkey trilateral summit

Pakistan-Afghanistan-Turkey trilateral summit

The Pakistan-Afghanistan-Turkey trilateral summit will take place in Turkey, from 11-12 December.

The Presidents of the three nations, along with their commanders-in-chief will congregate in Ankara, in an effort towards developing a joint approach to the Afghan-led reconciliation process.

This meeting is important as reaching a regional political solution is essential to guarantee peace and stability in Afghanistan during and after the NATO withdrawal of 2014.

Presently, Turkey has emerged as an important dialogist to the conflicting nations in the Islamic world. Furthermore, a number of Turkish troops are stationed in Afghanistan as it is a part of NATO. It assumes strategic significance owing to its clout amongst the ethnic Tajik and Uzbek groups in Afghanistan, and because it maintains good ties with Pakistan.

The Afghanistan-Pakistan-Turkey trilateral process was launched in April 2007, to promote cooperation in peace-processes, security, and economic development in the region.
