Maldivian Foreign Minister visits India

The foreign minister of Maldives, Abdul Samad Abdulla, will meet his Indian counterpart SM Krishna in India on Tuesday, April 03. Following the transfer of power on February 7 – when Mohamed Nasheed, the first democratically elected president of the Maldives – India has maintained a continuous engagement with the Indian Ocean island-nation.

Apart from the presence of the Indian Diaspora and military and economic cooperation, the Maldives is also significant for India due to its strategic location. Both countries will work on following a plan for early elections, which was endorsed by key parties in the island-nation.
