Only days before India and Pakistan celebrate their respective independence days, Prime Minister Modi stated that Pakistan was waging a proxy war on India. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif retorted that both countries need to focus on resolving issues instead of playing the blame game.

Neelam Deo, director at Gateway House and former diplomat, comments on the rhetorical exchange between the two countries and its impact on the forthcoming foreign secretary-level meeting scheduled for 25 August 2014.

Statement:

“Prime Minister Modi’s statement on Pakistan and terrorism, made during his speech to the army and air force in Leh on 12 August 2014, is consistent with the government’s firm stance on terrorism and border incidents. It signals that the government is resolute regarding its interests in the neighbourhood.

The recent exchange between the two countries is not likely to gravely affect the bilateral. India’s government will take a practical approach to economic exchanges between the two countries, which are hopefully on an upward trajectory. However, it is vital for the Nawaz Sharif government to show seriousness about addressing terrorism emanating from Pakistan.

It is evident from the political turmoil and recent serious incidents of terrorism in Pakistan that it is in its own interest to rein in terror groups that are based in the country.”
