Iran-P5+1 Joint Plan of Action

Iran-P5+1 Joint Plan of Action

The conclusion on the negotiations between Iran and the P5+1 (China, France, Russia, U.K, U.S., and Germany) countries to conclude a Joint Plan of Action(JPA) for Iran’s nuclear programme will be on 14 July.

The Iranian delegation is led by Foreign Minister Mohammad Zarif and the P5+1 delegation is led by Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy; the negotiations are taking place in Vienna, Austria.

The JPA is expected to constrain Iran’s nuclear programme in exchange for gradually lifting international sanctions. A U.N. Security Council resolution will endorse the agreement and cancel of all the previous agreements and sanctions.

Background:

The talks between the P5+1 and Iran started in 2006. They reached an interim agreement with Iran for six months in November 2013. In April 2015, an overarching framework called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action(JCPOA) was announced. This framework included various measures such as imposing inspection/monitoring channels and also restrictions on the number of centrifuges, the stockpile of uranium and the potency of uranium-to deter the production of nuclear weapons.
