Gateway House looks at the wave of violence in China’s northwestern Xinjiang region, and examines the trends emerging from the recent attacks. In one of the deadliest attacks in the past five years, Chinese media agencies reported that at least 39 were killed and 94 wounded in violence perpetrated by separatist groups in Urumqi, the capital of the Xinjiang region, on May 22. Chinese officials have blamed militant Uighur groups for the growing violence across the country and President Xi Jinping recently announced a “zero-tolerance” policy on terrorism. The Uighurs are ethnically Turkic Muslims and make up about 45% of the population in the Xinjiang region.

Sameer Patil, Associate National Security Fellow, identifies some of the key patterns emerging from the recent attacks, and provides an outlook on the Chinese crackdown on terrorism.
