Why Pakistan is not (yet?) a Democracy

Why Pakistan is not (yet?) a Democracy

On July 14, Gateway House hosted a private meeting with Prof. Philip Oldenburg (Professor of Political Science, Columbia University and South Asia Scholar), in conversation with Ashok Advani (Publisher, Business India) to discuss “Why Pakistan is not (Yet?) a Democracy”.

The discussion, facilitated by Ashok Advani, focused on the Indo-Pakistan relationship, from the formation of the Pakistani state in 1947 to the recent political developments between the nations. Some of the questions addressed were: What allowed Indian elected politicians to assert and maintain their dominance of the bureaucratic and military branches of the state, while that has proved to be impossible in Pakistan? What does the future hold for Indo-Pakistan relations?
