Third Nuclear Security Summit

Third Nuclear Security Summit

The third Nuclear Security Summit (NSS) will be held in The Hague, Netherlands, from March 24-25.

In attendance will be the heads of state or government of 53 countries and four international organisations including the United Nations and the European Union. The Hague Summit will review the progress made since the 2010 Washington and 2012 Seoul Summits and discuss the future course of action. The Summit is expected to conclude with the adoption of the ‘Hague Communique’.

The objective of the Hague Summit is to improve the security of all nuclear material (processed as well as reserves) and radioactive sources and enhance international cooperation.

The Indian delegation will be led by External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid.

The first NSS was held in Washington in 2010, where the participating countries agreed to work to secure all vulnerable nuclear material worldwide. In the second edition held at Seoul, countries recognised the need to increase synergy between nuclear safety and security and protect radiological sources from misuse.
