Sonia Gandhi, leader of India’s ruling Congress party, arrives in Dhaka on Jul 25 to receive a posthumous award – Swadhinata Sanmanona, the highest state award in Bangladesh – on behalf of former Indian Prime Minister Sonia Gandhi. Her visit, ahead of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s official visit in September, will be coupled with meetings with Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and President Zillur Rahman.
The award, to be conferred upon Ms. Gandhi by President Rahman, is in recognition of the efforts of the Indira Gandhi government during the liberation of Bangladesh in 1971.
