The 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly opened on September 17. The General Debate of the heads of states and heads of governments will take place from September 24 to October 1, where the theme for discussions will be ‘The Post 2015 Development Agenda: Setting the Stage.’

Following the address, India will hold a slew of high-level bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the UNGA. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is scheduled to meet his Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Nepali counterpart, among others.

Furthermore, Indian External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid is expected to hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts China, Egypt, Libya, Palestine, Germany and the UAE. He is also scheduled to take part in the ministerial meetings of NAM, BRICS, IBSA and G-4.

Following the General Debate, elections for the non-permanent members to the Security Council for 2014–2015 will take place in October. Polls to choose 18 members of the UN Human Rights council for a three-year term, too, will be held.
