Gateway House examines Russia’s gas supply agreement with China that represents a shift away from its traditional European markets, towards Asia. The two countries have recently inked a $400 billion deal which will see China pipe 38 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Russia over a period of 30 years. Russia is the looking to expand its market and after China it will be natural for Russia to look further east for similar deals with Japan, South Korea, India etc.

Amit Bhandari, Fellow, Energy & Environment Studies, breaks down this deal, discusses its implications for the energy relationship between Europe and Russia, and presents a blue print that India can follow to secure its own energy supplies.
