Foreign Policy Roadshow: The rise of the Islamic State

Sameer Patil, Fellow, National Security, Ethnic Conflict and Terrorism at Gateway House delivered a lecture on 18 December on the rise of the Islamic State, at Sophia College.

He discussed the methods used by the Islamic State to strengthen and expand itself, including social media to spread its propaganda, the deep web to purchase weapons and raise funds, and violent, flamboyant attacks on soft targets for garnering attention.

The presentation was followed by a lengthy Q & A session with the students. The event was attended by around 220 BMM (Bachelor of Mass Media) students and teachers.
