In 2017, Russia and India celebrate the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations. Over the years the two states have implemented a wide range of long-term and large-scale joint projects in energy sector, first and foremost in the nuclear area, making it one of the foundations of their special and privileged strategic partnership.
In order to boost comprehensive ties and bring India Russia bilateral relations to a new level corresponding to the changing global economic environment they are in need of innovative approaches in energy sector. The present paper is a result of Russian and Indian experts’ joint efforts to evaluate the potential of new collaboration formats and develop specific recommendations for enhancing cooperation.

On 12-13 October Manjeet Kripalani, Executive Director, and Amit Bhandari, Fellow, Energy and Environment Studies, Gateway House attended the Russian International Affairs Council and Indian Council of World Affairs International Conference in Moscow. The theme of the conference was “Strategic Visions of Russia-Inida Relations and Changes in World Order”.
Kripalani gave a presentation during the session on Meeting Global Economic Challenges and Russia-India Bilateral Agenda on Fostering Cooperation in Transport and Infrastructure: Prospects of multilateral projects, including INSTC.
Bhandari presented a policy brief that was co-authored by Vasily Shikin, Ph.D. in History, Expert, RIAC and Gateway House, titled “Russia–India Energy Cooperation: Trade, Joint Projects, and New Areas”.
On 5 December, Manjeet Kripalani, Executive Director, Gateway House participated in the Second Meeting of Heads of Think-Tanks (HoTT) 2017 of India and Russia. She was a panelist at the session on ‘Eurasia and India: Opportunities and Challenges’ (with India’s membership at the EAEU and SCO), and she chaired the session on ‘Impact of the Relationship between Russia and the U.S. on the Arctic and the Indo-Pacific’.
