D.P. Dhar

Durga Prasad Dhar, a polician-turned diplomat was a primary advisor to Indira Gandhi and one of her closest confidantes. He served as Ambassador of India to the Soviet Union, and is seen to have been an integral representative in establishing close Indo-Soviet relationships. It is believed that his diplomatic tact tilted the USSR in India's favor in the 1971 war with Pakistan. He actively advocated India's intervention in East Pakistan, now Bangladesh. He also believed that an India-oriented Kashmir resolution should have been an essential part of the Simla Agreement that India and Pakistan signed in 1972.
