Comprehensive Economic Partnership for East Asia

The Comprehensive Economic Partnership for East Asia is a Japanese led trade proposal for cooperation amongst the 16 member nations of the East Asia Summit.

The dialogue for the CEPEA has been in the preliminary stages since 2006, but took off in 2008-09 when India and Australia and New Zealand entered specific trade agreements with ASEAN. The idea was promoted by Japan and the ERIA (Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia)

Current Status: The ASEAN countries are currently considering one of two alternatives, the CEPEA and the East Asia Free Trade Agreement. A decision is to be taken by the ASEAN countries at their October 2010 summit.
