Xi Jinping & Narendra Modi: Beyond business as usual

Chinese President Xi Jinping will make his first visit to India in September 2014. His visit is the culmination of a series of high-level meetings between representatives of both countries since the formation of the new Indian government in May 2014. Xi’s visit is expected to elevate economic engagement between India and China to unprecedented heights.

What are the shifts required in policy and perceptions in both New Delhi and Beijing to deepen the engagement? How can the two countries bridge the trade deficit, currently skewed in China’s favour? Can India balance Chinese investments in manufacturing and infrastructure while safeguarding its domestic and geopolitical interests? Will China open up barriers to entry in critical industries such as pharmaceuticals and IT services? What steps can India and China take to build more trust in each other?

On 12 September 2014, Gateway House hosted an online panel discussion on the prospects for Sino-Indian synergy.
