The weakening of the Iraqi state by the onward march of militant Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in Iraq, coupled with the capture of oil-rich Kirkuk by the Iraqi Kurdish armed force – the Peshmarga, and the ongoing strife in Syria have reinvigorated the possibilty for Kurdish autonomy.
Neelam Deo, Director, Gateway House, outlines why this is a historic opportunity for a united Kurdistan, whether the ISIS violence will spread to other countries in the region, and provides an outlook into India’s and the international interests in the region.
