In the shadow of Dubai’s glittering skyscrapers, creaking, colorful wooden dhowsline the historic Creek waterway, groaning with Korean television sets, Indian basmati rice, Iranian pistachios and Chinese-made T-shirts and shoes. Many of the sailors aboard those dhows hail from Gujarat, the home state of India’s newly elected prime minister Narendra Modi, and sail ancient trade routes from Iraq to Somalia to India to Dubai.
