Regional impact of U.S.-Taliban deal

The U.S. and Taliban signed a deal on 29 February 2020 which offers the Taliban a once-in-a-leap-year opportunity of bringing peace to the region. The deal has been welcomed by many, especially in the U.S. and Europe. Its success hinges precariously on the Taliban’s sincerity in being part of a lasting, peaceful, and equitable solution for Afghanistan. The U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan poses different challenges and opportunities for India, Pakistan, China and the Central Asian countries north of Afghanistan, all with varied interests in the region. It also questions the sustainability of the democracy project in which so much has been invested. The infographic depicts the gains and losses of the neighbouring countries consequent to the U.S.-Taliban deal.
