India-Poland Ties

India-Poland Ties

The year 2014 marks the 60th year of Indo-Polish diplomatic engagement. The economic partnership between India and Poland, a former member of the CIS countries with which India had Soviet-era ties, has continued to grow. Bilateral trade of $2 billion in 2012, is expected to double by the end of 2014. In the energy sector, Poland and India face similar challenges such as a dependence on coal and imported oil and gas. There is potential for collaboration in the use of renewable energy, nuclear power and shale gas, which can help overcome our joint challenges. In addition, Poland sees potential cooperation in mining, IT, energy and defence.

On November 19, Gateway House conducted an interaction with H.E. Tomasz Lukaszuk, Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to India and the Polish Institute of International Affairs to gauge if the growing bilateral economic engagement could lead to a strategic partnership. If so, what would the partnership look like? Will it take more than Track II dialogues to catalyze those prospects? And finally, what role can think tanks play to increase the awareness of Poland in India?

Gateway House meetings are off-the-record and not-for-attribution. The meetings are for members and invitees only.
